Troy Macklin grew up in San Ramon, CA and began dancing at San Ramon Valley Dance Academy (SRVDA) at the age of 5. He is a 2008 alumnus of The Juilliard School where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance. While at Juilliard Troy was given opportunities to perform choreographic masterpieces by José Límon, Paul Taylor, Jiří Kylián & Ohad Naharin and create original dance works with Robert Battle, John Beasant III, Amelia Uzategui Bonilla, Lane Gifford & Doug Varone. He studied modern dance, performance, dance composition, created student choreographic projects and began teaching arts literacy courses for children through one of Juilliard’s Educational Outreach programs. Troy was also a Gluck Community Service Fellow performing at health care facilities across New York City with student formed multidisciplinary performing arts groups. In 2007 Troy traveled to Peru with a Juilliard student created arts project aiding for the Southern Peru Earthquake with free performances at correctional facilities, elementary & middle schools, cultural centers and small villages. He then began a summer arts outreach program of his own from 2007-09 where he lead teams of professional performing artists on tours across the San Francisco Bay Area. These artists were committed to sharing free, original live performances & arts workshops in non-traditional settings to underserved populations. Troy continued his non-profit volunteer work by teaching dance for Artists Striving To End Poverty’s 2008 Art-In-Action middle school summer camp in Homestead, FL.
He was a principal dancer, rehearsal director and teacher with the Rebecca Davis Dance Company in Philadelphia, PA in 2008. In 2009 Troy freelanced in NYC with several dance collectives including Breath Dance Project, Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theater and 360 Degree Dance Company. Troy has traveled across the world teaching dance, spreading arts education and showcasing his choreography at numerous venues including The Peter Jay Sharp Theater & Riker’s Island Prison in NYC, Yerba Buena Gardens, Shotwell Studios & CounterPULSE in SF, Temescal Arts Center in Oakland, Julia Morgan Center for the Arts & Eighth Street Studios in Berkeley, Teatro Clunia in Spain as well as venues across Texas & Peru. He has commissioned work for SRVDA, Shawl-Anderson Dance Center’s Youth Modern Dance Ensemble, The Branson School, College Preparatory School and Hawkins School for the Performing Arts. Troy’s choreography has been accepted into sjDANCEco’s ChoreoProject Awards & Works in the Works 2012. He was a 2013 Artist-In-Residence at Shawl-Anderson where he created his first evening length piece. Troy has performed in the SF Bay Area with ahdanco, The Anata Project, Dana Lawton Dances, Alyce Finwall Dance Theater & has danced with Janice Garrett & Charles Moulton’s contemporary company Garrett + Moulton Productions. Most recently, Troy danced with GroundWorks DanceTheater in Cleveland, Ohio.
